Indian River Regional Science
& Engineering Fair Program

The Indian River Regional Science and Engineering Fair (IRRSEF) Program is a comprehensive program that is open to all students grades K-12 in public, private, parochial, charter and home-schools. Prior to the establishment of the Indian River Regional Science and Engineering Fair, a major focus of this program, students from Indian River County traveled to Brevard County to compete along with students in Brevard. The Indian River Regional Science & Engineering Fair was the first endeavor of the Education Foundation, and remains its signature program.

The IRRSEF Program includes four main components:

1. Provides training opportunities for educators in the area of science
2. Provides a regional forum for student scientific achievement, the Indian River Regional Science & Engineering Fair (IRRESF)
3. Provides scholarships for students and teachers to participate at state and international science competition events
4. Provides outreach programs to teach students and parents how to create successful science fair projects.

This program has been highly successful in a number of areas:

1. Science research projects resulting from the IRRSEF have brought thousands of dollars in scholarship opportunities to our students as well as summer institute learning experiences in the United States and abroad.
2. This program includes the participation of the citizens of Indian River County as they judge the projects during the fair.
3. The program has been beneficial to the teachers in the school system as a curriculum has been developed that offers them much needed continuing education credits.
4. The program has offered mini-science seminars, such as, Exploration Station (4th and 5th grade) and Observation Station (6th – 8th grade). These outreach programs are presented by local scientists and professionals who work in the field of science.

The Education Foundation partners with the School District of Indian River County and St. Edward’s School annually in presenting this regional level of competition for the students of Indian River County. John’s Island Community Service League, Quail Valley Charities and Syngenta Crop Protection, Piper Aircraft, National City Foundation and The William Bingham Foundation are the major underwriters of this program.

The SSP Middle School Program is the only U.S. national science competition for science fair participants in grades 5–8. 300 semifinalists and then 30 Finalists are selected annually from a national field of thousands to participate in the finals of this competition. Gathering in Washington, D.C. each October, the Finalists present their projects to judges, fellow students and the public. In addition, Finalists work in teams on a variety of scientific experiments to judge their science, reasoning and communication skills.
