Vero Beach, FL (March 9, 2020) —

The Education Foundation of Indian River County announced today that long-time educator and school administrator, Douglas Herron, began his tenure as executive director. Herron will lead the foundation during a time of change and transition at both the Ed Foundation and the School District of Indian River County.

“I am beyond honored to have this opportunity to lead the Education Foundation at this juncture in its history,” Herron said. “After a 30-year career in public education, I am aware of the important role that the Ed Foundation plays in the success of students from Pre-K through 12th grade. I will lead the foundation with the same passion that drove me during my time as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal. It’s really all about the students and ensuring that they have every opportunity to be successful from the start of their public-school experience through graduation.”

During his time as an educator and school administrator, Herron was honored to be selected as District Teacher of the Year in 2004. As a school administrator, he successfully led both middle and elementary schools during his 13-year tenure. Herron is a 2016 graduate of the Florida Department of Education’s Commissioner’s Leadership Academy, which focused on recognizing and replicating high-quality teaching practices. “I am well equipped to ensure the continuation of the foundation’s successful programs, such as STEP into Kindergarten, Vision for Reading, the Sneaker Exchange, High Impact Grants, and the Science and Engineering Fair,” Herron said. “I understand the importance of programs such as these, as well as the importance of working collaboratively with district staff and community stakeholders to explore new opportunities for support that will be benefit the students of Indian River County.”

Herron has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration, a Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership. He and his wife, Carla, have one daughter, Angela, who currently works and resides in Washington, DC. During his spare time, he enjoys reading, cooking, and traveling with Carla.
